Monteith had voluntarily admitted himself into a rehab facility in March for substance addiction. In late April, the star completed the program and checked out. His last public appearance was with his girlfriend and Glee co-star, Lea Michele, on June 8 at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles.
As reported in USA Today, Us Magazine and several other media outlets, celebrity reaction to Monteith’s sudden passing began Sunday morning and continues to grow.
From the music world, there was this tweet from country superstar Taylor Swift: “Speechless. And for the worst reason.”
Rihanna weighed in with the comment: “Cory Monteith, may your spirit be at peace, and may you fly with the angels... Heartbreaking, my prayers are with all of his loved ones!"
Former ‘N Sync member Lance Bass posted the tweet: “Devastated about the news of Cory Monteith – such an incredible guy – my thoughts are with his family and friends.”
From singer Katy Perry: “Rest in peace Cory. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. Our prayers are with you.”
Some might think the tweet from One Direction’s Niall Horan had a few too many exclamation marks for a condolence: “RIP cory! Didn’t know him personally! Met him on a couple of occasions! Super nice guy! Thoughts and prayers with his family and friends! X”
There was even a tweet from eighties pop icon Boy George, who said, “Life is fragile, a praryer for all those who loved you and lost you. R.I.P.”
As should have been expected, there was a considerable outpouring of grief from those in the TV community.
From Tony Awards host and How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris: “How sad to read about Cory Monteith passing away. What a shame. He was a lovely, kind, talented guy and will be missed.”
Daytime talk queen Ellen DeGeneres: “My heart breaks for the friends and family of Cory Monteith. What a loss.”
The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco: “Cory Monteith. No words. Prayers. Thoughts w his family. This is terrible. Can’t speak.”
From Selena Gomez: “This hurts. I love you Cory. Rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.”
Naturally, there were responses from the members of Monteith’s Gleefamily. Co-star Dot-Marie Jones said, “I have no words! My heart is broken.” From frequent Glee guest star Kristen Chenoweth: “RIP Cory Monteith. You will be loved. Always.”
And since Twitter is an open forum, there were naturally comments on Monteith’s passing from people famous for being famous.
Reality-TV star and new mom Kim Kardashian kept it simple:
"Just heard about the death of Cory Monteith. So sad. Prayers 4 his family. Praying 4 Lea too! Words can't describe what they must be feeling."
Celebrity offspring Rumer Willis (the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis) chimed in with, “I am truly saddened to hear about Cory Monteith. What a talented and sweet guy. My prayers go out to his family and loved ones.”
Former Beverly Hills, 90210 star Ian Ziering, last seen in the cable movieSharknado, attempted to get involved in the grief game with his tweet, “Cory Monteith you have touched us all, and we will miss you. God bless you and your family.”
And finally, Italian actress and model Elisabetta Canalis, best known for her former relationship with George Clooney, was either ill-informed or wildly speculative with her tweet, “Rest in peace Cory Monteith, once again someone lost his battle to drug demons.”
